Convention Summary:

Lone Pine students (age 12 and up) are eligible to attend the Colorado Junior Classical League State Convention in Estes Park, Colorado. The convention is a Thursday morning to a Friday noon in mid/late April. Students have traveled from as far away as Massachusetts, Michigan, Florida, California, Washington, Canada, and Japan to attend! It is intended to be a fun, educational, and motivational three (or four) days.

What do students do there?
See the student-made Convention Videos at the top of this page!

Students can choose to do as many or as few events as they wish. I do ask them to sign up for three academic tests, and encourage them to try a variety of other events. Events include:

Pre-Convention Contests (due in January) - Essay, T-shirt design, board game design, poetry, program cover design

Olympika: Any of four pool relay races, various track and field events (most silly, e.g. throwing a toothpick "javelin"). This is done first as an ice-breaker.

Arts and Handicrafts: Map, chart, poster, ink drawing, mosaic, pencil drawing, photography (traditional or computer-enhanced), jewelry, cartoon, greeting card, sculpture, pottery, charcoal, small or large models, watercolor, oil/acrylic, decorative stitching, mixed media, militaria, misc., pastels, dolls, other textiles

Academic Tests: reading, grammar, vocabulary, derivatives, myths, mottoes and proverbs, literature, Greek history, Roman history, Roman daily life, geography, decathlon (questions from all 10 areas)

Performing Arts: Dramatic interpretation, Latin oratory, English oratory, costume, drama, skit

CERTAMEN!!! Four students per division (Latin 100/200 are Lower Division, Latin 300/400/AP are Upper Division) are chosen to be our Certamen (quiz bowl) team. This is always a very fun and popular event!

There is also a catapult contest, but we usually do not enter due to travel considerations.

Thoughts about Convention from Students:

Latin 100 student, 2016:  Convention was such an amazing experience and I met so many great new friends, some of whom I still talk to today. I would highly recommend attending convention to any students who are new to Lone Pine. This was my first year and I didn't know anyone, so I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, but everyone was so nice and we all became friends very quickly. I wish I could go back next year.

Latin 100 student, 2016:   Convention was really fun! It wasn't what I expected (although I'm not entirely sure what I did expect) but I had a lot of fun. I would take Latin again JUST for convention. So I'll definitely be going next year.

Latin 100 student, 2016:  Convention was AWESOME, I got about 1% of the sleep i should have, lost a headless doll, and the food was mutated -- awesome. and the people were great too. i had so much fun, and saw really strange animals.

Latin 100 student, 2016:  I went to convention, and it was amazing! As a first year, I didn't really know what to expect, but it was really fun and everyone was super welcoming.

Latin 100 student, 2016:  Convention was the most fun I had in a long time! The food wasn't very good but the activities were fun and hanging out with everyone was amazing!

Latin 300 student, 2015:   Convention was, without a doubt, the best three or four days of my life to date. Whether we were practicing skit and Certamen, frantically running all over the YMCA between events, or having a snowball fight on the hike, I loved every minute. One of my favorite moments was walking to the toga dance and singing Enchanted with everyone else. The whole thing felt like a dream, but it was a dream I got to share with some of my best friends. These friends have changed my life in so many ways, and it was so amazing to be able to see them in real life. To all of them, I say: thanks for the memories, and see you next year!

Latin 100 student, 2015:  Coming to Convention is the baest [sic; it's a Convention joke] idea ever! This year was my first Convention, and I was a little nervous because I didn't know what to expect, but I had SO MUCH FUN!!! Everyone is so nice, and you don't have to worry about getting lost or anything because all the older students just take you under their wing. Aside from the academic stuff and Certamen-the peak of Convention, so much excitement revolving around that-it's a great opportunity to meet your fellow Lone Piners.

Latin 300 student, 2015:  I really loved Convention. The scenery is gorgeous, the people are awesome, and I got to win awards too! Convention has been my four most favorite days of the year. To anyone considering coming, come! You can't fully understand it until you've been there. Gratias for running it, Ms. K!

Here's my advice for anyone who wants to get sweepstakes:
1. Preconvention Contests: they aren't really that hard- just talk about the theme in a way that sounds sophisticated! They're due in February, so by the time convention comes around you won't have to worry about them anymore.
2. Arts & Handicrafts: You can do several over the summer, and they aren't that hard either. Some of them (like dolls and pottery) only have a few entries. If you choose your contests well, you are guaranteed to win something. I was the only person in one of my arts!
3. Performing Arts: Do one! They get you points, and you'll probably getting a ribbon as long as you know what you're doing.

4. Tests: One word: Quizlet. I didn't study as much as I would have for an Exit Quiz or Unit Test until five days before convention, but spending two or three hours on Quizlet each of those days got me top three in every test I took.

AP student, 2014:  Any Lone Piner should attend convention. First, it's hard to develop relationships with any other students when the only time you "see" each other is online. Convention is only four days but after you develop these relationships, convention doesn't seem long enough. The memories that you make at convention during moments like certamen and the trip to Rocky Mountain national park are priceless. Trust me if you are an LPer, you want to attend convention.

Latin 100 student, 2014:  If I could only use one word to describe Convention, it would be incredible. Even though you're only there for a few days, the memories made are innumerable.   The scenery is gorgeous and all the events are a ton of fun. If you're thinking about going, please do!   It's completely worth it.

AP student, 2013: I’m home safe and sound! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all you did at convention this year. I had a great time, and I owe you a WHOLE lot for the way you’ve prepared me, over the years, to succeed. I know that because of your teaching, I will be ready to continue at (Univeristy) (even though I genuinely wish I could stay at Lone Pine for another five years!). I hope to go back to CO again for vacation when I have the chance! MAXIMAS gratias.

Latin 200 student, 2013: What can I say? Convention has been SIMPLY AMAZING. Being a 200er, and not seeing all my classmates for 2 years, Convention was the perfect way to. Basically, we jam in skit, performing arts, tests, rubber duckies(now in glow-in-the-dark, robots, and greek gods), breaking wrists, certamen practice, certamen, roller skating and all kinds of activities, ALL related to Latin, all in 4 days. Convention is so hard to describe...you have to be there to actually know what it's like. This being my first year at Convention, I expected what other's had told me about it, but I got more. I made stronger bonds with those who I had only talked online to, and had the time of my life. To those considering coming, I have to say, come. Not only will you meet tons of awesome cool people with the same interests as you, but you will also make amazingly strong friendships. So....come!

Latin 200 student, 2013: I just wanted to thank you for making Convention possible. It was truly the BEST experience of my life. :) I hope to see you next year!

Latin 200 student, 2013:  Convention was so much fun. You get to meet the people you have been listening to on electa all year. You spend 3 days with them doing all thing Roman. Play olympyka events, compete in certamen. and have art projects judged. It is the best...

Latin 200 student, 2013: Convention is a two day trip across a sea of nerdy Latin awsomeness. You get to meet all kinds of people that you only knew from online before and by the end of two days, you feel as if you've known them your whole life. You get to take tests (yes you get to they're actually kind of fun) and watch all kinds of fun events like the skit (Ours was amazing this year if I do say so myself). Then of course, there's Certamen. Even if you're not part of a team, you'll get very much so into it. It's truely a spectator sport. I practically went insane during the lower level finals when we won, but it was too close (aka: we won by 5 points). Needless to say, I was more excited when lower level won Certamen than I was when the St. Louis Cardinals won the 2011 World Series (yeh, that's saying something).

Latin 300 student, 2013: 1) My favorite Convention moment was right after Lower Level won Certamen. As the judge read off the points, we were all clutching each other's hands so hard they almost broke and holding our breath, and then I heard "And in 1st place, LONE PINE" and everyone jumped up and screamed and applauded and I saw Lower Level onstage looking ecstatic and like they couldn't believe it and I couldn't believe it either. Then all of Lone Pine rushed down the stairs simultaneously and the LL team was running toward the stairs, cheering. I was sitting in a seat in the middle, and I was tripping over everyone and people were tripping over me because everyone wanted to get to the stairs, and then we were on the stage and everyone was hugging and screaming and jumping up and down. I think that was my favorite moment of Convention, the huge group hug on the stage and the feeling that, for just a second, we ruled the world. And we were the happiest people in the world too. At least, I was. :)
2) Convention was the best time of my life, and I'm not exaggerating. It was so fun to meet all the people I only ever knew online and put faces to the names. It's an amazing experience and you should definitely go if you have time; even if you have to fly for hours to get there. I know from experience that it's worth it. The most stressful part of Convention is probably Certamen, but it was also my favorite part. I wasn't part of a team, but it was amazing just to watch. Lots of people worry about the academic tests, but those are actually okay. Just study on the Quizlet site, take some old JCL tests, don't worry about it, and you'll be fine. Performing events are also awesome. As Ben said, "Eat grapes like a Roman, do theater like a Greek, and wear pants like a Gaul!" All in all, Convention is a breathtakingly amazing experience, and you should definitely come, even if you don't plan to enter much. I look forward to seeing you there next year!
Also: Thank you so, so, so much for an awesome Convention experience! I really wasn't exaggerating when I said it was the best time of my life. Convention and just being a part of Lone Pine will be something I will look back on happily for the rest of my life; it was definitely a highlight of my year. I hope I can go next year, and I'll definitely recommend it to anyone in Lone Pine!

Latin 200 student, 2013: The Sardines moment was indeed pretty impressive, although it was pretty annoying at the time. Winning lower-level Certamen was really nice, though. For describing it... it's being with people who really, truly love Latin, for about three days straight. To some extent it's people like you, and in other ways it's people who are just different enough to be interesting, and of course there are occasionally people who are different enough to be annoying. You'll meet a lot of people, and make a lot of friends, but when you go home odds are good you won't be able to see a lot of them in person. On the other hand, that's what Facebook is for. Still, I got lucky with one person who lives about two hours away from me, and she's the closest. You get to have all sorts of girly-talk (or I would assume manly-talk, but I wouldn't know, I wasn't there for that) Of course there's always the snow, and the llamadeergoats, and the thrill of winning. And I personally just like airplanes and airports, so of course there's that. In general, if it's your thing, you will absolutely love it, and if it's not, you'll just sort of suffer through it until you go home. You don't get many people in Lone Pine for whom it's not their thing, though.

Latin 200 student, 2013: Wow, it's really sad that convention is over. I've met so many good friends. I think the class is going well, I think convention has motivated me to try harder at catching up. Latin 100 student, 2013: I think my favorite moment was LL winning certamen. And I would describe convention as something that must be done when you are in Latin. It is just too good to pass up.

Latin 100 student, 2013: My favorite moment was misdirecting people playing sardines while playing poker (: I think I would describe convention as a great way to meet a lot of people from all over the world.

Latin 100 student, 2013:  Convention was amazing. I think it's a really great experience and everyone should try it once. It's great to meet everyone and hang out and I loved playing sardines in the dorm. Thank you so much for making that available to everyone!

Latin 100 student, 2013:  Attending convention was the highlight of Latin for me this year. My favorite events were certamen and the skit. After seeing the different kinds of art projects, I want to do art next year. The best part was meeting Lone Pine students and Ms. K in person! It was a blast playing sardines, rollerblading, and just hanging out with each other.

Latin 300 student, 2012: Latin Convention is one of my favorite parts of the year. Where else can you wake up to herds of elk, declaim Cicero, buy glow-in-the-dark rubber duckies, plus argue about which Cicero you're descended from? In four days, somehow we cram in skit, Certamen, tests, ox jokes, and a year's worth of memories. There's so much to be involved in: art projects, Certamen, skit, oratory, dramatic interpretation, tests, and athletic events. The awards were definitely a factor in my attendance - Convention is a great opportunity to get ranked overall at a state level, and it looks fantastic on college applications. (I know I'll be putting it on mine!) Studying for Convention also helped me with my Medusa exam, NLE, translation assignments, and class tests. I was nervous heading off to Convention my first year (2011), especially since it was so far from home, but CoJCL Convention has a very warm, friendly-competition atmosphere, and Ms K made the whole trip run smoothly. One of the best parts of Convention is meeting your classmates in person, and becoming even better friends than you are in class! Especially after the wonderful time I had at Convention again this year, I'll definitely be going back. I strongly, strongly recommend it!

Latin 200 student, 2012: Convention was one of the most incredible experiences of my life! It was amazing to get to know all my classmates in person and even make friends from other schools. I participated in all kinds of activities, from high-pressure competitions like Certamen and the academic tests to more low-key activities like the Arts and Handicrafts exhibit and the Olympika, or sports events. There were even more events that I didn't get to do this year but can't wait to do next year, such as the costume contest, Latin oratory, Program Cover design, and even roller skating in the YMCA gym. Seeing all the projects and artwork inspired by classical history and myth really inspires me to read and research Ancient Rome and Greece, and studying for Certamen and academic tests really helped me on the National Latin Exam. Thank you Mrs. K for the most fun I've ever had! I am SO coming back to Convention next year!

Latin 100 student, 2012, explaining Convention to someone who didn't want to do performing arts: Really if you don't do well on the tests you don't have to tell anyone if you don't want to, besides I only got 39% on one of the tests and still got 4th place. There are also two history tests you could take, then you would only need one more. I actually hate acting, but I still had fun there, because I didn't have to act. Aside from the tests, you don't actually have to do anything at all. I recommend doing olympika (athletic events) just because those are boring to watch. After that you have lunch then tests, then skit or WAYK (or run back and fourth). After that is watching/participating in quiz bowl. It was very exciting to watch, even though I didn't know more than one or two answers. Then the quiz bowl finals(also exciting) then the social/dance that we skip (we just hang out with the other Lone Pine people) then bed. If the activities are not enough to make it sound fun, I would like to add that we were laughing almost the whole time (I'm sure that you already know that by not going you miss out on a ton of jokes). The second most boring thing I did there was WAYK, and I would spend three hours on a plane there and three back just for it. WAYK over webcams has NOTHING on this. (the graphics are much better, and III advanced is a lot of fun). I didn't participate in much, and although I do know some Latin (I'm in 100) It would have been fun even if I didn't. It is Latin oriented (art is stuff like Chariots and pictures of famous stuff in Rome et cetera) but not complete latin-no-off-topicness-allowed. In fact, aside from the convention events, there was very little Latin-focused discussion. It is more like the off-topic-ness in the chat in class for 100. I don't swim, or run very fast, but Olympika is not very competitive or important. If you are completely opposed to running/swimming there is a bean sorting event. For me this year at convention, almost the whole thing was meeting the people, seeing the sites, and playing WAYK.

Jay says: To all you who are considering coming to convention: Come! Not only is it great fun, but you get to meet your classmates. also, it builds very good team spirit!

Connor says: Convention was fun, it was great to meet people in real life and it got me very enthused about Latin again.

David says: Latin convention was quite possibly the most fun part of the entire year! I thoroughly enjoyed it: it was a very useful, enjoyable, and worthwhile experience! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to attend!

Nathan says: Latin Convention was definitely the highlight of my Latin year, even the exams there were fun to do. I had a great time.

Nora says: It was cool to get to meet the other kids that you'd only seen typing in chat, and if you've never been to Colorado it's nice to see it while you're there too.

Liesl says: I loved convention! I really enjoyed getting to meet people. I learned a lot and had fun. And to people who are thinking about going to convention: Go! It's really fun to meet all the people you've only talked to over internet to.

Amanda says: It's a really good decision to make, to come to Convention. You meet so many new people, and see so much cool stuff. …I remember seeing elk quietly sitting and looking at us while walking to breakfast, and falling into the snow, because I'd never seen that much snow before in my life and didn't know how to deal with it. Convention is basically a chance to talk to cool people for several days about Latin, sleep in unlikely places, and see snow. Does it get any better?
Caitlin says: I went to the Colorado convention last year. It was a lot of fun! I thought that the pre-convention contests were great. I entered a board game, which won a prize. I heard the pool events were great. Also, the "sporting" events were creative and fun. I did a javelin throw...with a blow up noodle. I was a part of the Certamen team, it was a real challenge, but it was fun! The academic tests were challenging as well, but it was rewarding to receive awards for the tests I took. I took Grammar, Daily Life, and Deca-something--which included questions from all the other ten tests. I would really encourage you to participate! I was really sad that we didn't go this year. If I had another year, I would soooo go! (2008)

The state convention was fun. I'd go again, especially since we know what to expect this time. Last year was our first time going to the convention and it wasn't as fun as it could have been, since we were trying to figure out how things worked. It would have been much more fun this year if I had gone, and next year should be fun too. - 2008 Student

Most of the convention except for the Quiz Bowl Certamen wasn't as formal as it sounds. Most of the athletics were in a big open building, using paper plates, pool noodles, and other similar things. The Certamen wasn't even that big. The best part of the whole convention was getting to know and spend time with all our classmates, even though we didn't get quite enough unscheduled time to hang out. Still, it was fun. - Second 2008 Student

Convention Thoughts from Parents:

Parent of an AP student, 2013: What a great convention! I was glad to see this list because (name) couldn't even tell me all her own awards, let alone how everyone else did! As usual, she had a great time (I think each year gets better, actually). Thank you for all your coordinating efforts and heading up Convention this year!

Parent of a Latin 400 student, 2013: Thank you for all of hard work and hospitality hosting the Convention. (Name) had a great time, as always. It is a wonderful benefit and a special memory.

Parent of a Latin 300 student, 2013: (Name) talks about Convention every day, and is already planning for next year. : )

Parent of a Latin 200 student, 2013: She had such a great time, and it meant so much to her. I'm so glad she was able to go.

Parent of a Latin 100 student, 2013: He had a great time. On a scale of 1 to 10 (my most accurate way to gauge things with (Name)) he rated his trip as a 9. He really liked the skit!

Parent of a Latin 100 student, 2013: Home safe! (Name) had a blast!

Parent of a Latin 100 student, 2013: (Name) is home and talking nonstop about the great time she had. Thanks!

Parent of a Latin 100 student, 2013: Convention was a blast for the boys. What a lot of work you and others put into planning what was a great event for the students. (Two names) truly enjoyed the whole experience. They came home with lots of enthusiastic stories, and it's clear that they learned a lot. We would tell other parents that convention offers the kids motivation as they prepare for their events AND they get to meet lots of kids who are excited about their study of Latin.

Parent of a Latin 300 student, 2013: Convention: Worth flying across the world for. Sending (Name) to convention requires a significant commitment for us: a return ticket from Tokyo to Denver. But each time it's turned out to be amazing value. The convention experience turbo-charges her enthusiasm for Latin -- to the point that she can talk about almost nothing else for weeks before and after. What's more, for an online home-schooler the chance to get together with far-flung classmates is golden. Although Latin at Lone Pine is just a single course, thanks to bonding at convention (student)'s Lone Pine friendships loom larger in her life than those with classmates at another online school where she takes several courses. Thanks to you and all the volunteers who helped make this year's convention a success.

Parent of Latin 200 student: I accompanied my 12-year old daughter to the Colorado Junior Classical League Convention for our first experience of what could easily be billed "Latinpalooza." It was 48 high-octane hours of historical detail, grammatical precision, togas, chitons, chainmail, and a very large rubber duckie. I would say it was all good clean fun, but 2 Lone Pine sweepstakes winners earned the privilege of sending whipped cream flying through the air into the faces of 2 CoJCL Officers, helping raise money for the organization in the process. With over 350 students, ranging in age from 12-18, there was no shortage of spirit and sportsmanship, whether participants were performing skits, reciting speeches, competing in Olympika, responding to Certamen questions, or clustering with friends. In ample supply, too, were dozens of works of art with classical themes, readily demonstrating that CoJCL attendees not only know how to study Latin, but how to draw, sculpt, sew, and build too. While my daughter was one of the youngest participants, the environment was completely safe and very supportive, making even a young California girl feel right at home amidst the snow-capped Rocky Mountains and grazing elk. Besides, Mrs. K is the consummate organizer, attending to every detail in advance, including making 3 different kinds of brownies to accommodate everyone's dietary restrictions! The students had clear instructions and personalized schedules, with chaperones and chauffeurs to make sure everyone got where they needed to go. I used up our frequent flyer points to get us to Colorado and back, but I'm already saving up to get us to next year's Convention. While we will make our trip to Colorado another family vacation with birthday present rolled into it, it is certainly worth the expense for our daughter to spend time with her Lone Pine teacher and teammates and to experience the collective wisdom of 100s of enthusiastic Latin students and a super-sized rubber duckie!

A Parent says: The Latin Convention was a great way for my daughter to be able to be away from home and still in a safe and welcoming place. She had no issues with dealing with airports and loved spending time just hanging out with the other attendees. She wants to go back.
