About Karen Karppinen:
Karen is currently certified in Colorado to teach grades K-6 (all subjects) and grades 7-12 math and science (Latin coming soon; she's waiting to finish the MA before submitting the course work to the CO Dept of Ed.). She taught high school (public and private) in Michigan for four years (before moving to Colorado). She has extensive tutoring experience. Karen has a B.S. in biology, with minors in math and chemistry. She has done coursework equivalent to minors in computer science and Latin and is currently working on an M.A. in Latin. She credits her perfect score on the GRE (800 verbal, 800 quantitative, 6 writing) to her Latin courses -- Latin really does help immensely with any academic endeavor!

Lone Pine Goals:

Online Program:  Lone Pine Classical School offers Latin 100-400, AP (Advanced Placement) Latin, and Greek online courses to homeschoolers, so that they can explore  the classics and participate in COJCL and NJCL extracurriculars.  This can help immensely with college applications, academic and life skills, and allow them to enjoy the positive parts of the "high school experience" if they do not have these opportunities in their local communities.  Our goal is to offer the highest-quality classes to as many students as possible, so that they can achieve their academic and personal goals and have significant advantages when applying for and entering college (awards/honors/scholarships for their college applications, skills to pass any placement tests and excel in college Latin courses, and real college credit from the A.P. Latin exam).

Day Program:  Lone Pine Classical School offers a customized K-8 education to Exceptionally and Profoundly Gifted children in the Fort Collins, CO, area.  We believe in an individual plan of study (with a student-led project and at least one field trip each month), appropriate acceleration by subject, a non-institutionalized setting, community involvement, opportunities to participate in competitive academic and non-academic events if desired, and a student:teacher ratio no greater than 4:1.
